Wedding hair Q&A with hair stylist

Choosing a hairstyle for your wedding day is such a huge decision. It’s so important as a bride to look and feel your best so that you can just enjoy your big day! And get some great pictures… With wedding season approaching quickly and 2022 set to be one of the busiest wedding seasons yet (thanks covid), lots of brides will be thinking about or due to trial their wedding hair.

To help all of our Beauty Works babes out, we sat down with specialised wedding hair stylist, Mairead Meechan (a.k.a @wedlocks) to ask all of the questions about wedding hair that you may be unsure about or scared to ask.

WHEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR HAIR BEFORE YOUR WEDDING?

I would never tell a bride she isn’t allowed to wash her hair on her wedding day if she wanted to. However, I recommend for the bride to wash her hair the evening before, using no styling products and always blasting the hair with a hairdryer until the hair is fully dried. It’s best if the bride blow-dries her hair upside down to create more volume and get as much air through the hair as possible. Never leave the hair to dry naturally unless using natural curls for wedding day hair. I also recommend no curling or straightening after drying (leave this for the stylists).

HOW LONG DOES WEDDING HAIR USUALLY TAKE?

A bride’s wedding hair usually takes between 1hr and 15 minutes – 1hr and 45 minutes, depending on the desired style.

DO YOU NEED TO DO A TRIAL RUN BEFORE THE DAY?

Yes, trials are not only important for a bride to see the type of look they want for the day but also for the stylist to see the hair type and a trial allows both to know exactly what to expect for the day.

Pictures from instagram can be misleading, you may see a hairstyle that you love on a blonde but if your hair is brunette, it will look completely different. Until you see yourself with a hairstyle you may actually want something completely different to what you thought in your head.

Logistics for the day will also be discussed at the trial appointment. It’s really nice getting to know each other as well before the day! Being a part of someone’s wedding day is something that happens once in a lifetime so turning up on the day without meeting first is just something that I never choose to do!

WHAT PRODUCTS WILL I NEED TO BUY?

Depending on the client’s hair type, the products recommended may vary. If the hair is in need of a little TLC, I recommend investing in a salon professional Shampoo and Conditioner. Brides may also need to invest in Hair Extensions to get their desired style. I always recommend Clip-in Hair Extensions as these can be easily placed for up-do’s so no clips are ever on show.

DOES WEARING A VEIL LIMIT HAIRSTYLE CHOICE?

No veils don’t limit your hairstyle choice, you may just have to adapt a hairstyle slightly so it allows you to wear your veil in the correct place. A Mantilla veil for instance wouldn’t ever be placed under a low bun as it wouldn’t fall as it should around your face and shoulders.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WEDDING HAIRSTYLE?

I love anything with texture! Whether it’s sleek texture, curled texture, any kind of up-do with movement through it – the kind of texture that has been styled so it looks clean, not with lots of frizzy fly-aways (unless you are creating a real relaxed boho vibe). But you also can’t beat a glam wave, I usually always recommend using Hair Extensions for a wave because it holds that bit longer with extensions in than natural hair does.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST REQUESTED WEDDING HAIR LAST YEAR?

This is a hard one, Ponytails were very popular last year with brides and bridesmaids but I would say every year without fail a half-up, half-down look is very popular. It is usually because a lot of brides feel more confident with their hair down but they don’t want it all “just down” so a half-up look is a good compromise, plus it also works well with veils. You can do lots of different things for a half-up look. You can add braids, padding, Hair Extensions and choose the type of curls you want, so it’s quite a versatile choice!

HOW DO YOU KEEP THE HAIR IN PLACE ALL DAY?

It’s so important that a bride’s hair stays in place all day as it has to go through so much, such as different weather, greeting people and dancing. Overall it’s such a long day. The main thing I do to make the hair last is layer different products and build the hair with good scaffolding. As long as the hair is secure and structured underneath it won’t move on the outside.

HOW TO MAKE THE STYLE LAST ALL DAY?

For hair styles with curls, I recommend you allow the curls to set before styling. Using products before, during and after will also help to keep longer lasting curls.
